As the year turns

Well we are halfway through the year now and I hope that the next few weeks will bring plenty to eat. The broad bean pods finally look like they are swelling and the pea pods too. I found the pigeons raiding my newly emerged 2nd crop peas today so I think I'll sow more and cover them with wire netting.

Lots more rain is forecast this week, but I'm being optimistic and hoping for some sunshine between the showers. We now officially have had the wettest April, May & June on record. Really, enough is enough! So much for hosepipe bans.
Mrs Blackbird has been busy since last week. All 4 chicks are thriving and now have a full coat of feathers. I took this blurry photo today on my phone but I'll try to get a better one in the week to show how quickly they develop. Mango almost got a juvenile blackbird that got trapped in the raspberry netting today. I will lift the net's skirts and even if they manage to take a bit of fruit I'm sure there will be plenty for all of us.

The raspberry crop has reddened up in just a few days and I could easily pick a whole punnet today.
They are ripe but still quite bitter. The strawberries on the other hand are quite sweet and ripening quickly. The rain has made the straw wet and soft so I'll need to bulk it up with some more asap.
